Urun stared out into the darkness, his vision obscured by the remnants of the fire, wondering where Osulin was and what she was enduring. Could gods die? She was half human, after all, though still immortal as far as he knew. She had already lived for thousands of years. Even if she couldn’t die, he hated the thought of her having to endure pain or imprisonment.

The combination of the warmth of the fire and the temperate condition of the surrounding air caused his eyelids to become heavy, almost to the point where he had to chase where his thoughts were going. While he wrestled with fatigue, Tere and Lily were speaking to each other quietly, but loud enough for Urun to hear.

“I never heard of arba before today,” Lily said. “I’m confused about what everyone keeps saying about them, that they use magic, that they are magic. What’s the story with them?”

“They were thought to have died out around the end of the Age of Magic. It’s thought that—”

“No. I heard that part of it earlier. I mean, what’s their story? Why haven’t I ever heard of them? Where did they come from? Were they created by Surus along with the other races and they had their own place, like maybe one of the mysterious continents to the south?”

“They…” Tere turned his head toward Urun and caught him listening. “Urun, Lily wants to know about the origin of the arba. It’s smack in the middle of your area of expertise. Do you want to tell her?”

Tere said it loudly enough that Marla and Saevel—softly chatting with each other—both turned their heads to look at the priest as well.

“Uh…I suppose I can tell it. Is this considered my turn in storytelling, because as I remember, I was the last one to tell a story for our mealtime tales, the evening before we left the Academy.”

Tere chuckled. “Sure, you can count it as another turn. You have my permission to skip the next time you’re up in the rotation.”

“Oh, good. Story credit.”

Saevel gave him a confused look, but he waved it away. He’d explain it to her later if she wanted.

“Fine. I’ll tell you the short version. One that, by the way, is approved by Osulin herself, since she is in part of the story.”

Urun moved closer to the fire, where Tere and Lily were already sitting. Marla and Saevel scooted closer to the trio, settling on a slightly raised lump of dirt.

“We all know the story of Trikus Phen, the great hero, and how Codaghan the God of War took offense to him showing mercy to an enemy and how he viciously beat the hero until the edge of death. Then how Mellaine, who had been watching the whole thing, rushed in as soon as Codaghan left, used her natural magic to bring the hero back, and healed him over a period of time. Then how the two fell in love and he decided to stay with her for the rest of his life.
